The kiss of life – a picture that has traveled the world

This famous photograph, taken in 1967 by Rocco Morabito, is titled "The kiss of life".
Portrait of two electrical workers, Champion Randall and J.D. Thompson, atop an electricity pole.

They were performing a normal maintenance that day, when Champion accidentally touched a high-voltage cable.
More than 4,000 volts run through his body. My heart stopped instantly.
(Just think an electric chair uses about 2,000 of them...). )

His clutch kept him hanging, preventing him from falling.
J.D. Thompson, who was rising just below him, didn’t miss a moment: he reached up and began mouth-to-mouth breathing directly there, hanging in the air.
He couldn't do CPR, but he didn't give up: he kept breathing air into his colleague's lungs until he felt a slight heartbeat.

Then he loosened the harness, loaded it on his shoulder and brought it down.

On the ground, together with other colleagues, he practiced cardiac massage.
Little by little, Champion is breathing again. Heart started beating again.
By the time the rescue arrived, lives had already been saved.
And so it was: Champion survived and lived until 2002, when he died of heart failure at 64.
J.D. Thompson is still alive.

That moment, immortalized by a kiss-like shot, went around the world.
In 1968 he won the Pulitzer Prize.

There are friends that are not friends,
And friends who are more than brothers.
